Treatment Protocol

In most cases, patients undergo a series of 15 to 25 decompression treatments for the involved disc level, depending on their individual situation, over a course of 4 to 6 weeks, typically. Each treatment typically lasts between 25 and 45 minutes (on the table) and is performed on patients while fully clothed. In most cases, heat is used prior to treatment to help the muscles relax and to soften tight connective tissue. At the end of a decompression treatment, a cold pack is applied with electrical muscle stimulation to help the treatment hold better. Total time in our office is about an hour for spinal decompression treatment.

Also, to help the body progress through care, patients are fitted with a decompression disc distracter belt – a back brace on steroids. All other things needed for that patient are recommended as well. At the mid way point of decompression protocol, we reassess how well you are doing by performing tests similar to what you had in order to qualify for care. Objective tests such as the sEMG (or surface electromyogram) and industry accepted outcome measures are also used to measure progress. At the conclusion of the treatment series, we then perform a exit examination to again assess progress. Also at the conclusion of the protocol, you are given mobilization and strengthening exercises and taught how to avoid re-injury.
